Research

Pro Eth is committed to solving the technical challenges that are around us. While structural analysis and design in our main areas of work, we are also actively engaged in research activities. Our members are experts in our fields and are writing, publishing and delivering lectures on different topics.

Rammed Earth:

Rammed Earth (RE) is one of the most sustainable materials for construction and also an indigenous construction technique in various parts of Nepal, especially in the mountainous areas (Mustang, Dolpa, Jumla, etc.). Moreover, they are also being used in urban areas like Kathmandu and some other cities for residential, school, community buildings and other sectors like hotels and resorts’ purposes. Pro Eth is actively supporting the structural services to architectural and construction firms in design and supervision of these buildings. However, study and research related to RE in both stabilized and un-stabilized form have not been conducted in the context of Nepal, and there are no specific design codes and guidelines to follow for the designers and constructors.

Pro Eth is therefore trying to work and contribute by researching in this domain. With our years of experience in design and construction supervision in this building material, we are supporting in standardization of this material in Nepal.

At the moment, in the urban areas, this material is gaining attention for its aesthetics. although the building cost is likely higher than with RC and Steel. Nevertheless, there are different aspects associated with it, more importantly, the number of such buildings being built, and the available human resource.

While it is a common and only material (besides stone houses) in the mountain regions, due to a lack of appropriate construction techniques, they are degraded in a few years, and people are reconstructing them as required. In this regard, the important question is how to make it affordable for all?

Plastic Waste:

Under this project, we are exploring the possibilities of making infrastructure products using the waste plastic. Visit Plastic Solutions – Innovative solution to plastic waste (proeth.com.np) to know more.

Steel

The use of steel in modern-day construction, particularly for commercial and industrial purposes, is growing in Nepal. Working on several types of steel buildings in Nepal, we have realized several problems in steel design and construction, and our team is researching in different topics to solve these issues.

Bamboo

The modern use of bamboo as buildings is also gaining attention. With limited information on the mechanical characteristics and the local/global behavior of the bamboo houses, Pro Eth is supporting the adoption of this material in construction by increasing inhouse expertise and researching this material.
